Salesians: Missionaries of the Young

God called Don Bosco and gave him a specific mission in life which was to work for the salvation of the young. It was among the young people that Don Bosco developed his style of life his pastoral and pedagogical legacy, his system of education, his spirituality and method of evangelization. Now his sons also follow the same style of life and it is very relevant in today’s mission field. This makes our charism unique giving primary importance to young.

Our constitutions tell us that we are evangelizers of the young and more so if they are poor. We evangelize them by living the spirituality of good shepherd by being present among the young and by instilling in them the various skills and values. But above all we evangelize them by our holiness of life which is the greatest gift we can offer to the youth of today.

Don Bosco the evangelizer of the young convinced that it is God who sends the young people to him. He loved the young very personally that concerned with the integral salvation of young people. To some it offered bread, to others trade skills, and cultural advancement and to every one it provided a path that opens to truth, urges them to develop and grow as human beings. But his ultimate aim was to lead young people to God, to save their souls, to make them God-fearing persons and good Citizens.

To become an evangelizer of the young one needs to have a deep understanding of the Salesian pedagogy which was born of Don Bosco’s experience with the young. Hence we need to study and apply the preventive system in our relationship with the young people. The evangelization of the young is carried out through among the young. This implies that the evangelizer must have right attitude such as he should make himself loved rather than feared, use reason religion and loving kindness in his relationship. He should strive to become a father, brother, and friend to them.
